Venus Williams, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

By the Numbers

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
