While perhaps not at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
