This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
