The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
