New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he said.

A Contentious Issue

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
