Mikel Arteta Concedes Long-Term Tenure Depends on Winning Silverware.

On the eve of his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.

A Look Back: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. However, that early success stands as his only major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said in response to a query about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal met the day after his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

Given that chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

Arteta currently has 18 months to run on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the team's buy-in as the key factor. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team faces the upcoming game coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are completely changed from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
