Massive Turmoil Projected: Britain's Most Severe Climate Crisis Outcomes Laid Bare by Scientists

The most severe projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been mapped by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C rise in temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy demand.

Plausible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These consequences, some of which are associated with irreversible climate shifts, are considered as improbable but credible. The team explained that these models filled a gap in planning that had left the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," commented Nigel Arnell who oversaw the study. "Britain has been making preparations in the absence of the methods to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now given decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but must not overlook."

A Spectrum of Extreme Weather Projections

Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios coming to pass cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what measures will be taken to tackle global heating and how the Earth's systems will behave. This research was compared to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for economic stability.

Critical Possibility Details

  • Severe Heating: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon rainforest dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is losing strength and becoming unstable due to global heating. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water supplies would be fundamentally reshaped," noted Arnell.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic collapse rapidly, submerging low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by coastal engineers.
  • Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because tiny specks from fossil fuel combustion block solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Preparing for the Worst

The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the building of major projects, such as new towns, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these climate risks could also hasten the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis formulated the extreme models using a blend of observed and historical experience, digital projections and scientific theory. The possibilities do not take into account broader worldwide issues like the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.

The research was initiated as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the threats for severe warming. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by some observers.

An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the heart of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and becoming a clean energy superpower. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
