Key US Panel to Decide on Changing Newborn Hepatitis B Vaccine Advisory

Following a postponement and an unusually contentious gathering, a federal vaccine advisory panel was set to cast ballots on Friday on whether to change the longstanding recommendation that all newborns be inoculated against hepatitis B.

Heated Debate and a Deferred Vote

The initial day of the meeting on Thursday was characterized by heated debate over restricting access to the hepatitis B vaccine for infants and a resolution to postpone the decision by a day to provide committee members extra time to examine the language. The panel, which counsels the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on immunization practices, had put off the vote twice in the past.

“Is there any definitive data of injury of giving this immunization before 30 days? Or is this speculation?” asked one adviser.

In response, another attendee stated, “There is inadequate data about the long-term risk.”
