Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent representative knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the morning session finished without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Points in Talks

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home any longer and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home again, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.

In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk comes, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
