Armed conflict at school
Schools in Nigeria's northern region have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants informed journalists that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.
