Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any determination is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to cut government money from California and suggested suspending the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to fatalities and casualties.

Newsom's office noted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously stated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration said in a last month's statement addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A this month's study found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
