Ex British Soldier Charged of Killing Kenyan Woman Shows Up in Courtroom

A suspect has appeared in court as extradition proceedings started in the investigation of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was killed near a UK military installation in 2012.

The accused Robert Purkiss, 38, who is a native of Greater Manchester region, was presented at Westminster magistrates court on the last Friday, and informed the court he intended to contest the extradition. It is understood that he was arrested on Thursday evening.

An arrest warrant for Purkiss was released by a court in Nairobi in September. The state attorneys told the Kenyan court that the individual had been facing a sole charge, of murder, and that the Kenyan government would pursue his extradition to stand trial.

He previously worked as a army medic with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, the infantry regiment for the northwestern England, including on tours of Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, 21 years old, a hair stylist who had a infant daughter, disappeared after a evening out, and her body was discovered after two months in the area of the accommodation where she had previously spotted.

Not a single person had earlier been detained or indicted in connection to her death. The arrest of Purkiss was the result of a fresh police investigation, which followed a report in 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the newspaper reached out to several current and former soldiers in the unit.

This inquiry has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral security treaty, retains jurisdiction in the legal case.
