Equatorial Guinea skipper Carlos Akapo and teammate Josete Miranda have each been banned for four matches for abusing the referee following their 1-0 defeat by Sudan at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The decision was handed down by a governing body committee after it reviewed the referee's report from the Group E encounter on Sunday, a loss that confirmed the side's elimination from the tournament.

The official stated that the two players "repeatedly uttered abusive and obscene remarks" towards him and his assistants following the full-time whistle.

"Such comments were made in a context of extreme frustration related to the loss, but nonetheless constitute a grave violation of the standards of respect and fair play as well as the governing rules," added the referee.
